Collin Morikawa Confirmed for 2022 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba

Two-Time Major Championship Winner to Make First Start at Mexico’s Pioneering PGA TOUR Event

Collin Morikawa, currently ranked No. 9 in the Official World Golf Ranking, has committed to compete in the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. Scheduled for November 3-6 at El Camaleón Golf Club at Mayakoba on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, this year’s event will once again feature 132 PGA TOUR players competing in 72 holes of stroke play for a purse of $8.2 million dollars.

Morikawa, at 25 years of age and through only four seasons on the PGA TOUR, has already claimed five victories including two Majors. In 2019, he earned his first PGA TOUR title at the Barracuda Championship in just his eighth career start. In 2020, he won twice—the Workday Charity Open and his first career major championship title at the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park. The following year, he lifted the Claret Jug as the Champion Golfer of the Year at The 149th Open Championship and also claimed the WGC-Workday Championship at The Concession.

"Collin Morikawa is such an exciting addition to our field,” said Joe Mazzeo, Tournament Director. “He is an incredible player and a true gentleman; I know our fans will enjoy getting to watch Collin tackle El Camaleón.”

This year’s World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba will mark the latest appearance in Mexico for Morikawa, who has enjoyed success south of the border in the past. In addition to the 2020 WGC-Mexico Championship, Morikawa competed as an amateur on three occasions at the Cabo Collegiate presented by CFO4Life including in 2018 when he claimed the title as individual medalist.

Earlier this month, tournament officials announced the return of two-time defending champion Viktor Hovland, currently ranked No. 11 in the Official World Golf Ranking; additionally Tony Finau and Billy Horschel, ranked #14 and #17 respectively, will also be joining the field. Finau won in back-to-back weeks on the PGA TOUR this summer and ultimately finished ninth in the final FedExCup standings. Horschel is a seven-time PGA TOUR winner whose 2021-22 season was highlighted by a victory at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday.

Additionally, the field currently features several other Major Champions, including Jason Day of Australia, Lucas Glover, Webb Simpson and Jason Dufner of the USA, Francesco Molinari of Italy, and Justin Rose and Danny Willett of England. 2022 will see at least six former champions return to Mexico — Brendon Todd, Patton Kizzire, Charley Hoffman, Harris English and John Huh are all scheduled to join Hovland in this year’s field. Sebastian Muñoz, Emiliano Grillo and Mito Pereira will represent Latin America once more.

Representing Mexico will be Armando Favela of Tijuana, B.C., and Sebastian Vazquez of Merida, Yucatan, who earned their invitations via the Mayakoba Match Play and the Mayakoba Mexican Qualifier. This year will be the fourth appearance in the tournament for both. Enrique Marin Santander will represent Spain as the winner of the Villa Magna Qualifier to Mayakoba.

Following two years with no public tickets due to the pandemic, 2022 will see the public welcomed back to Mayakoba as tickets are now on sale to witness the world’s best golfers tee it up at El Camaleón Golf Course and soak in the fantastic scenery of the Mexican Caribbean. Tickets are on sale now with pre-sale pricing at the tournament’s website www.WWTChampionshipatMayakoba.com.

Players for the field of 132 competitors have until 5 p.m. ET on Friday, October 28, to commit to the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba and can withdraw from the tournament at any time. Further field announcements will be made in the coming weeks.
