Mexico's Jose de Jesus ("El Camaron") Rodriguez and Isidro Benitez received invitations to compete in the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, scheduled for November 3-6 at El Camaleón Golf Club at Mayakoba on Mexico’s Riviera Maya. This year’s event will once again feature 132 PGA TOUR players competing in 72 holes of stroke play for a purse of $8.2 million dollars.

Rodriguez of Irapuato, Guanajuato, has participated more times at Mayakoba than any other Mexican, with 2022 being his 10th appearance (2008, 2009, 2011-2014, 2017, 2018, 2019 and now 2022). At 41 years of age, El Camarón, is a veteran who boasts a long and successful career; he was a member of the PGA TOUR in 2019, and has more than 20 international victories. He is currently a member of the Korn Ferry Tour and his most recent victory was the Jalisco Open GDL on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica.

For the 23-year-old Benitez, this will be his second appearance (2020) at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. He is a member of PGA TOUR Latinoamerica and also the Mexican Golf Tour where he is ranked #1 in its order of merit. In 2019, Benitez won the Open de Argentina which qualified him for The Open Championship in 2019.

The World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba field will feature four Mexicans, as Rodriguez and Benitez will join Armando Favela, from Tijuana, B.C., and Sebastian Vazquez, from Merida, Yucatan, who earned their invitations through the Mayakoba Match Play and the Mayakoba Mexican Qualifier, respectively. This year will be the fourth participation in the tournament for both Favela and Vazquez.

Last week, tournament officials announced the participation of world No. 9 Collin Morikawa, the return of two- time defending champion Viktor Hovland of Norway, currently ranked 11th in the Official World Golf Ranking, and the confirmation of Tony Finau and Billy Horschel, ranked 14th and 16th, respectively.

Additionally, the field currently features several other Major Champions, including Jason Day of Australia, Lucas Glover, Webb Simpson and Jason Dufner of the USA, Francesco Molinari of Italy, and Justin Rose and Danny Willett of England.

2022 will see at least six former champions return to Mexico—Brendon Todd, Patton Kizzire, Charley Hoffman, Harris English and John Huh are all scheduled to join Hovland in this year’s field. Sebastian Muñoz, Emiliano Grillo, and Mito Pereira will represent Latin America once more.

Following two years with no public tickets due to the pandemic, 2022 will see the public welcomed back to Mayakoba as tickets are now on sale to witness the world’s best golfers tee it up at El Camaleón Golf Course and soak in the fantastic scenery of the Mexican Caribbean. Tickets are on sale now with pre-sale pricing at the tournament’s website www.WWTChampionshipatMayakoba.com.

Players for the field of 132 competitors have until 5 p.m. ET on Friday, October 28, to commit to the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba and can withdraw from the tournament at any time. Further field announcements will be made in the coming weeks.
