    Viktor Hovland
2021 marked the beginning of a new era for Mexico’s pioneering PGA TOUR event as World Wide Technology debuted as the event’s Title Sponsor in the first year of a landmark seven-year alliance. From November 1-7, 2021, the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba was celebrated at El Camaleón Golf Club on Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

The 15th anniversary edition also relied upon the leadership and support of tournament host RLH Properties and premier partners UNIFIN, Tequila Patrón and the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo to once more stage a world-class event that brought together the strongest field in the event’s history and yielded results and impact like never seen in the event’s tenure.

Norway’s Viktor Hovland became the first back-to-back champion in Mayakoba history as he cemented his third career 'viktory' on the PGA TOUR with a new tournament 72-hole scoring record at 23-under-par 261. Guadalajara native Carlos Ortiz reigned once more as the Best Mexican finisher at Mayakoba, finishing runner-up to Hovland. Ortiz’s second-place finish moved his total career earnings at Mayakoba to $1,710,780 USD, which places him fourth on the tournament’s all-time career earnings list. Matthew Wolff, at only 22 years of age and already a star on the PGA TOUR, fired an opening round of 10-under-par 61 to tie the course record which had stood unmatched since Roland Thatcher carded a third-round 61 in the 2008 event.

Beyond Hovland, Ortiz and Wolff, the 2021 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba welcomed a player field stronger than ever, including players such as Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Tony Finau, Tyrrell Hatton, Abraham Ancer, Billy Horschel, Rickie Fowler, Scottie Scheffler, Henrik Stenson, and many more.

In addition to the on-course excitement, Mexico once more shined as host and embraced the spotlight with the culture and warmth of its people providing unmatched hospitality for all—including World Wide Technology, its guests, other sponsors and of course the participants and their families. Media coverage and global exposure reached record levels in 2021, while the positive effect felt in the local community by way of economic impact and philanthropic outreach was once more tremendous.

With a massively successful 2021 now in the rear view mirror, the future is bright for the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.

How do you say Funk in Spanish? That would be funkeon (campeon - champion) or funkador (ganador - winner). The above question is well worth asking as Fred Funk is the champion of the inaugural World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. Funk claimed the title with a birdie on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff against Jose Coceres.
